As part of the Disaster-Resilient Housing for Vulnerable Rural Communities in Bhutan – Phase II Project, supported by the Karuna Foundation, the Programme Team from Tarayana Foundation conducted a field assessment visit to Somlaykha, Dorikha, Laptsakha, and Chimuna villages under Chimuna Chiwog, Logchina Gewog, Chukha Dzongkhag, from 15–18 June 2026.
Accompanied by members of the Gewog Committee, the team carried out household visits, field assessments, and community consultations to better understand the living conditions, housing challenges, and disaster risks faced by vulnerable rural households. The visit provided an opportunity to engage directly with community members, whose experiences and perspectives are essential in shaping interventions that reflect local needs and priorities.
The participatory consultations enabled residents to share their concerns, identify risks, and discuss practical solutions for improving the safety and resilience of their homes. These interactions will inform the planning and implementation of disaster-resilient housing interventions that are technically sound, community-driven, and responsive to the realities of rural Bhutan.
By working closely with local communities and government stakeholders, the project reinforces the importance of inclusive planning and local ownership in building safer, more resilient settlements. The initiative represents another step toward strengthening community preparedness, reducing vulnerability to natural hazards, and improving the long-term well-being of rural households through sustainable and resilient housing solutions.
