As part of its continued commitment to promoting sustainable livelihoods and preserving traditional craftsmanship, Bhutan TSHAR Institute conducted a 16-day Capacity Building Training on Bamboo Handicrafts for community members of Sachilo Chiwog, Wangphu Gewog, Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongkhag, from 15 to 30 June 2026.
Funded by the European Union and implemented in close collaboration with Wangphu Gewog Administration and Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongkhag Administration, the training equipped participants with practical knowledge in bamboo harvesting, treatment, processing, and handicraft production. The programme also focused on strengthening community enterprise groups by enhancing value addition and creating market-ready bamboo products that can generate sustainable household income.
Beyond developing technical skills, the initiative promotes environmentally sustainable and climate-resilient livelihood opportunities by encouraging the responsible use of locally available bamboo resources while reducing pressure on forest ecosystems.
The training in Samdrup Jongkhar marks another milestone in Bhutan TSHAR Institute’s growing outreach across the country. Following the successful programme in Haa, which benefited communities in western Bhutan, the Institute has now expanded its capacity-building efforts to the eastern region. Additional training programmes are also planned at GMC, reflecting the Institute’s ongoing vision of making bamboo-based livelihoods accessible to communities across Bhutan.
