Climate-Resilient Construction Training in Lumang, Trashigang

At Tshogonpa in Lumang Gewog, Trashigang, a hands-on training on climate-resilient construction was conducted from 16th to 25th February, equipping local communities with essential skills to build safer, more sustainable homes.
The training brought together 17 carpenters and masons from six chiwogs of Lumang Gewog, who actively participated in an intensive, practical learning experience led by our architect Mr. Matej Vacek.
From the very beginning, the training emphasized learning by doing, ensuring that participants gained skills they could apply directly in their own communities.
Key areas of learning included:
- Carpentry and masonry techniques
- Bamboo treatment and sustainable construction practices
- Structurally resilient design approaches
Early in the training, participants successfully completed bamboo-reinforced foundations for the first household, marking an important step from theory to real-world application.
Advancing Climate-Resilient Construction

As the training progressed, participants deepened their understanding of climate-resilient building techniques, focusing on practical solutions tailored to local conditions.
They gained hands-on experience in:
- Fixing beams securely with walls using bamboo to improve earthquake resistance
- Designing and placing windows to better manage wind, sunlight, and air pressure
- Constructing stronger roof trusses to withstand harsh weather conditions
- Applying bamboo treatment methods for durability and sustainability
These skills are critical for strengthening the resilience of rural homes to environmental challenges while promoting the use of locally available, sustainable materials.
What began as a technical training has now evolved into a foundation for long-term community impact.
With the successful completion of the programme, the trained group is now fully prepared to move forward with the construction of 31 safer, climate-resilient homes in Tshogonpa and across the wider Lumang community.
This transition from learning to implementation reflects the true spirit of the initiative:
empowering communities with knowledge, skills, and confidence to build their own resilient futures.
A Step Toward Holistic Development
This milestone represents more than improved construction techniques. It highlights a broader vision of:
- Strengthening local capacity and self-reliance
- Promoting sustainable and climate-adaptive practices
- Enhancing safety, dignity, and well-being through better housing
From the first bamboo-reinforced foundation to the final day of training, the journey in Tshogonpa stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved through collaboration, skill-building, and community commitment.
