
On the final day of Her Majestyโs visit to Zhemgang Dzongkhag, Her Majesty Gyalyum Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck met with the community members of Kikhar, Tali, and Dakphel villages at Kikhar.
In this chiwog, communities have benefited from water security and sustainable land management interventions implemented under the Living Landscape: Securing High Conservation Values in South Western Bhutan project – supported by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and the International Climate Initiative (IKI).
Water Security Initiatives
Her Majesty inaugurated a 13,000-litre water reservoir tank in Kikhar village, benefiting 55 households. To ensure sustainability, local water caretakers and plumbers received hands-on training to maintain the system effectively.

Key water interventions in Zhemgang include:
Springshed assessments for two drying water sources in Tali and Kikhar villages, identifying potential recharge areas.
Trench construction in recharge zones to enhance spring discharge.
Formation of Water User Groups (WUGs) to strengthen community-led water management.
Water Infrastructure Support:
Kikhar, Nangkhor Gewog: 13,000-litre water reservoir & 5,000-litre spring intake โ benefiting 55 households
Tali, Nangkhor Gewog: Water source fencing & tap renovation โ benefiting 25 households
Tongroma, Bardo Gewog: 10,000-litre water reservoir โ benefiting nine households
Kambrung, Khomsar Gewog: 10,000-litre water reservoir โ benefiting 12 households
Sustainable Land Management (SLM) Initiatives
Over 540 participants from Trong, Nangkhor, and Bardo Gewogs engaged in awareness and participatory planning sessions.


107.92 acres of sustainable land development completed, benefiting 137 households and supporting 9,767 orchard trees across communities.
Through these integrated efforts, communities in Nangkhor and Bardo Gewogs are now enjoying improved water security, healthier landscapes, and strengthened resilience for the future. ![]()
