image-size-sampleTarayana has successfully facilitated the 3rd Smile Asia (first one as Operation Smile, Singapore) Surgical Camp to treat patients with cleft lips & palates and burn contractures from the 23rd-26th of September, 2015 in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. The camp was held in the Monggar Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH). The Smile Asia team consisted of 28 medical and non medical volunteers from seven different countries. The Smile Asia team was accompanied by three officers from Tarayana.
A total of 98 potential patients were screened at the camp of which 31 patients qualified for surgeries. Most of the patients were from the villages of Bangtar, Deothang and Gomdar in Samdrupjongkhar, Ramjar in Tashi Yangtse, Phongmey, Wamrong, Khaling and Mutangkhar in Tashigang, Narang in Monggar and Panbang in Zhemgnang. All the cases were of cleft lips and burn contractures. Subsequent to the successful surgeries, Smile Asia also donated goodies for the children on the last day of the surgical camp.
The Foundation would like to take this opportunity to extend our deepest appreciations to: Smile Asia Team 2015, the Monggar Regional Referral Hospital team for their excellent collaboration, the Ministry of Health for their guidance and support, the Bhutan Broadcasting Services for the free announcements and camp coverage, the Kuensel Corporation for print media coverage, the DrukAir Corporation for their support. Together, we were able to make the Surgical Camp a success, where our young babies and children needing special care in particular benefitted. We salute the determination and fortitude of the Smile Asia 2015 team members in braving our poor roads after the flight was cancelled due to bad weather and proceeding with the camp without missing any patient screened, working very long hours. On behalf of all the beneficiaries, we would like to thank you once again.
