Community Radio

Posted on: August 5th, 2016

The first Community Radio station was set up in Dechen-Pelri village in Sarpang Dzongkhag. It went live on 3rd December 2015 following a soft opening on the same day. It will be on test for three months as the community gets better acquainted with the roles, responsibilities and functioning of the local radio station. The station was set up with assistance from the Ministry of Information and Communication (MoIC), funded by the Swiss Development Corporation and technical guidance received from NOMAD, India. The radio coverage is available throughout the Chokorling Chiwog. The community members are excited about their very own radio station and were eager to record their voices through songs and storytelling. Besides entertainment purpose, the radio station will serve as a platform for nurturing raising awareness about developmental challenges and related issues within the community.  The community looks forward to the formal launch of their station in March 2016, by Her Majesty The Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, the Founder and President of Tarayana Foundation.

Currently the radio station airs four hours a day on the frequency 91.1 mHz. The selected community members received training for ten days earlier in November supported by the Department of Information and Media, MoIC in collaboration with UNESCO on developing programmes for community radio, basic technical knowledge (assembling and maintenance), using the proper software, editing programmes and basic  code of conduct and ethics for the station.
