The First National Dialogue between Mountain Communities and the Government

Posted on: June 5th, 2018

The First National Dialogue between Mountain Communities and the Government was held today, chaired by Hon’ble Secretary, Ministry of Works and Human Settlement. The dialogue was attended by the Minister, Ministry of Finance, Vice Chair of the GNHC, Hon’ble Secretaries of Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Director General, Directors, relevant officials from different government agencies and the community representatives from Dagana, Haa and Samtse Dzongkhags. The dialogue was focused on the five Sustainable Goals (SDGs) chosen for this year’s theme for High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) to be held in New York in July, at the UN. 16 community representatives participated in the dialogue presenting issues revolving around Climate Change: Water& Sanitation, Access to Modern Energy, Safe Cities and Human Settlements, Sustainable Production and Consumption Pattern and Life on Land. The community members articulated the issues people living at high, mid and low elevations face on a daily basis while the government officials clarified national plans and policies designed to mitigate these issues and enable them to be empowered. We hope that such dialogues will be held on a regular basis and pave the way forward to bridge the gap between grassroots issues and national policies. Her Majesty The Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, Hon’ble President of the Foundation also attended the dialogue as an observer. This initiative is supported by GEF-SGP, @UNDPBhutan and organized in partnership with the Gross National Happiness CommissionNHC.
